Our Story

BUILT IT TWICE

On October 8, 1871, a cow kicked over a lantern in a barn on DeKoven Street. By the time the flames subsided, Chicago was gone. What happened next is why we exist.

1871

The Great Chicago Fire

A small blaze in Catherine O'Leary's barn spread rapidly, fueled by drought, wooden buildings, and the infamous Chicago wind. Over 3 square miles of the city were destroyed. 300 lives were lost. 100,000 people were left homeless.

1872

The Phoenix Rises

Within weeks of the fire, Chicagoans were already rebuilding. The city passed an ordinance requiring fireproof materials. Architects from across the world flocked to the blank canvas that was Chicago, inventing the skyscraper in the process.

1885

The Birth of the Skyscraper

The Home Insurance Building became the world's first skyscraper. Chicago didn't just rebuild — it reinvented architecture. The steel-frame construction developed here changed cities forever.

1893

The Columbian Exposition

Just 22 years after the fire, Chicago hosted the World's Columbian Exposition, attracting 27 million visitors. The city that had been ashes was now the pride of the nation.
